The Construction Management (CMGT) program, established by the University in 1977, began offering classes to 7 majors in the Fall of 1978. In 2008, with over 700 majors, the CMGT Department is the largest in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management and the fifth largest department in the University. The 146 members of the 2008 graduating class receiving the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management enjoyed unprecedented recruiting by 120 construction companies that interviewed CM graduates, as well as undergraduates for summer internships. Most of these companies rank among the largest California, US, indeed the world’s builders of commercial and residential buildings, bridges and highways, and industrial projects. A survey of the 2008 graduates reveals 96% have accepted job offers. CM graduates interviewed with an average of 5 construction companies, received 3 job offers, and accepted an average starting salary of $62,000 per year, usually including profit sharing, medical, and transportation, sometimes even relocation expenses and signing bonuses. Graduates will join the management staff on prominent construction projects in California such as the Oakland-San Francisco and Benicia Bridges and various hospital, school, rapid transit, and water treatment projects. Current Placement statistics demonstrate that the demand for CM graduates more than triples the department’s output. With 300,000 licensed contractors in California alone and bipartisan support for additional construction funds for infrastructure and general building projects, future demand for Chico State’s quality CM grads will continue to rise. |
